Attacks paid for by big business are ‘driving science into a dark era’ | Science | The Observer.

Powerful lobby groups who are anti-science are generally from the political right (though in the case of some scientific research like genetic modification of crops from the left) which is frequently also the religious right. They are vested interests wanted to keep their power, which generally involves denying the results of rational enquiry, that is to say the realities of the material world.
